Wong Lu Ying was born in China in 1980. She graduated from the Fujian Academy of Fine Arts (Xiamen, China) in 2001, and two years later, founded the Yu Ying Sculpture Workroom. She is currently a member of the Sculpture Committee of China's Arts and Crafts Association.

She seeks to exploit various art approaches to significantly express the outlook of life. Together with two fellow artists, they took a year to find a theme, finally settling on the “Laughing Buddha”, a traditional and cultural icon in the hearts of the Chinese people.

Their intention is to introduce art into society by allowing people to interact with it. In order to do so, they use elements that people can relate to in their daily lives. Only then, they believe, can there be any significant meaning to the individual.
