Born in 1960 in Singapore, Oh Chai Hoo graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts with a Diploma in Western Arts in 1982. To date, he has held six solo exhibitions and has participated in many overseas exhibitions around the region.
In his artistic journey of realization, it was Zen Buddhism that brought him to rediscover his Chinese roots. It led him to reinvent his artistic style merging traditional Chinese calligraphy with contemporary practices and interpretations.
His unique signature style uses the collage technique with a metallic foil to exude vibrant colours and emanate a meditative quality that induces contemplation. Versatile in calligraphy, his spontaneous heavy ink brushworks, which are continuously executed in one breath on rice paper, heightens the senses of power and movement of the stroke.
The writings on each piece of calligraphy are ancient parables and beliefs from well-known sages. In his relentless search for growth and in refining his techniques, he synergizes his body, mind and soul to break new grounds.
