Born in 1974 in Singapore, Ang Pei San graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor degree in Science (Pharmacy) in 1996. She began taking art lessons in 1987 at the Gradsign Art School, and was taught by several prominent artists including Lim Leong Seng and Boo Sze Yang.
Ang has participated in numerous group exhibitions such as the Nokia Singapore Art Group Exhibition(1999), United Overseas Bank (UOB) Painting of the Year exhibition (2003 and 2005) and the 20th and 21st Asian International Art Exhibition (2005 and 2006). Her works have won the Encouragement Award (2006) at the China ASEAN Youth Artwork Creativity Contest held in Guangxi, China; and the Highly Commended Award (2003) and Distinction Award (2005) in the UOB Painting of the Year Competition in Singapore.
The inspiration of Ang's artistic creations are the Chinese or Han characters. She is fascinated by the beauty and complexity found in the strokes and elements of each character.
ˇ°My paintings express the complex and sculptural aspect of the Chinese characters, emphasizing its abstract and calligraphic quality. The impasto strokes of congealed pigment create sculptural forms much like making positive castings of seal carvings.ˇ± |
